Imagine bringing a fragment of the seashore into your living room. Today’s interiors often separate us from nature, reducing it to a small houseplant or a picture on the wall. But what if a piece of furniture could capture the atmosphere of an entire landscape? This is the idea behind Vesilinja. The project explores how a fragment of a seashore or wetland landscape can be translated into a conversation piece. By using reflection, vertical forms, and plants, the project reinterprets this natural boundary in a way that can exist inside a home.

Water, reflections, and vegetation like reeds all contribute to the distinct atmosphere of shorelines. Vesilinja transforms these components into an interior floor-standing object that combines features of a plant vessel and a table. The reflective top surface represents the waterline, creating the illusion of water through reflection. Below the surface, vertical metal tubes function as both structural legs and small vessels for plants. Their different lengths and spacing variety creates a visual rhythm similar to reeds growing along a shoreline.

According to landscape architect Ian McHarg, “Design with nature” is essential for creating meaningful environments. This idea runs alongside the concept of Vesilinja, where natural elements inspire the structure and appearance of the object. The project connects interior space with the outside world. Environmental philosopher Timothy Morton suggests that our relationship with nature is often distant, and design can help reintroduce those connections in everyday environments.

The structure of the object is going to be produced from steel tubes combined with a mirror-polished stainless-steel surface placed within a plywood frame. The frame also serves as a structural element that holds the tubes in place. Tubes and the plywood would be painted green to reference underwater vegetation, add playfulness, and strengthen the visual connection to the shoreline environment. The result is a unique object that feels both architectural and organic but at the same time looks minimalistic, sleek, and modern.

In conclusion, Vesilinja explores how nature can be brought indoors in the shape of something sleek and modern. By combining reflection, vertical tubes, and plants, the object recreates the atmosphere of a shoreline environment. It shows that even a single interior object can bring the feeling of a larger landscape into everyday spaces.
